Presently,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-43129339\">74% of UK companies<\/a>&nbsp;still pay higher rates to their male staff and, worryingly, the number of women in Britain\u2019s biggest company boardrooms&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/jul\/17\/number-of-women-in-top-boardroom-positions-falls-report\">has shrunk in 2018<\/a>. The entrepreneurs building tomorrow\u2019s products are mostly men and mostly white (I won\u2019t lie, I\u2019m one of them). Only 4% of Venture Capital funding to help build our future goes to women. That\u2019s a staggering 96% of all funding to build our future going to projects founded by men, which could be due to the fact that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ad5abace-3f0f-11e7-82b6-896b95f30f58\">90% of decision makers at UK venture capital firms are men<\/a>. (The creative industries are no better with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsnicethat.com\/news\/gender-pay-gap-design-industry-gemma-germains-opinion-150518\">81% of decision makers being male<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, some of you will be tempted to argue that it\u2019s because there are far fewer women entrepreneurs to fill those roles and raise that money \u2013 but this then becomes a self-perpetuating prophecy. Women won\u2019t take the risks unless they are able to get the support and funding necessary to grow a successful company. Not only this, but it is harder for them to see themselves as capable of being in a role unless some of these roles are held by women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/zealous.co\/isabellabersellini\/portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/zealous.co\/about\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/11\/Isabella-Bersellini-724x1024.jpg\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/zealous.co\/isabellabersellini\/portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>\u201cGlitch\u201d by Isabella Bersellini, Zealous illustrator<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless we\u2019re careful, the future won\u2019t look any better. I\u2019ve increasingly heard gender bias would be removed with the rise of artificial intelligence. But so far, even building something as simple as a chatbot leads to big ethical questions. Should orders directed to a personal assistant be responded to in a woman\u2019s voice? Should we be training chatbots with open data mostly generated by men (e.g.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Wikipedians\">84% of Wikipedia editors are men<\/a>)? Can algorithms built, managed and funded by mostly male teams, be gender neutral \u2013 will these teams even be aware of these issues?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the prevalence of technology in our society, and its quick rate of acceptance by new users, this is no small issue; this could lead to an even more biased society amplified by the false assumption that technology is unbiased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to live in a world that serves us all, and to do so we need diversity represented across all tiers of our society. We want to do our bit in supporting any initiative which allows for rebalancing the gender bias, and support those who will help design the world of tomorrow.
