V&A Illustration Awards 2019
Discover the best of contemporary book, editorial and student illustration through the work of the V&A Illustration Awards 2019 winners. This display highlights the winning work and student shortlist from the annual illustration competition.
The awards were established in 1972 and have since championed the UK creative industries, bringing recognition to the remarkable accomplishments of both published and student illustrators.
This year’s Book Illustration and Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the year is German-American author Nora Krug. Her work, Belonging, is an illustrated and hand-lettered visual memoir of a German family’s memory of WWII. It tackles the author’s loss of cultural belonging whilst confronting previously unanswered questions, piecing together the family’s troubling story.

The Buxton Spa Prize 2019
The Buxton Spa Prize 2019 is an art competition celebrating the town’s culture, natural beauty and heritage. The Prize, now in its sixth year, is a semi-en plein air competition. All submitted work is initiated at a specified location in and around the town.
The final exhibition will be taking place Friday 28th June – Wednesday 31st July, so stay tuned to see the winners!

Beecroft Art Gallery: Colour
This exhibition explores the theme of colour and its use in art. It is an investigation of the emotional response to colours and the ways in which artists have utilised them.
This subject is explored through a selection of paintings from the Beecroft Art Gallery collection and loans from other institutions, displayed alongside a contemporary sculpture piece and a sound installation.

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2019
The Summer Exhibition is the world’s largest open submissions art show and brings together art in all mediums – prints, paintings, film, photography, sculpture, architectural works and more. The display is representative of what is happening in the art world right now, providing a brilliant overview of art created by emerging artists alongside some of the biggest names in contemporary art and architecture.
This year, British painter Jock McFayden RA has co-ordinated the 251st Summer Exhibition. Over 1,500 works are on display, most of them for the very first time.
