September / October Highlights

It’s been a while! With museums, galleries and art spaces reopening to the public, you may want to dip your cultural toes back into the art world’s waters. If you’re struggling with what to check out first (both online and in person), here’s a list of 5 events to add to your cultural calendar for the coming weeks.

Each lures us into a world that is familiar yet alien, a parallel fiction in which we are plunged into an unfolding history, revealed to us through a chorus of unidentified voices.”

The 2012 Turner Prize winner, Elizabeth Price, lives and works in London. Her arresting works are a combination of visual and oral elements. Successions of imagery are layered with pop songs and percussion soundtracks to create captivating films.

SLOW DANS features a trilogy of works by Price. One of these works includes KOHL, a vast and unseen underground liquid network that hosts mysterious apparitions called “visitants”. It is made up of upside-down images that have been taken from the archive of Albert Walker, a former miner.

The Academicians’ Gallery

“The Royal Scottish Academy is an independent body of artists and architects. Royal Scottish Academicians are eminent artists and architects, elected by their peers, and Scottish by birth or domicile.”

This month, TheAcademicians’ Gallery have opened their doors for an exhibition of works by renowned members of the Academy including David Michie RSA, Leon Morrocco RSA, Adrian Wiszniewski RSA, Marian Leven RSA and lots more!

The Time We Call Our Own

Open Eye Gallery presents, The Time We Call Our Own, an exhibition which brings together photographic projects from across the globe that document a collective sense of time, place and identity.

Featuring work from a group of internationally based photographers and artists, the exhibition explores how style, music and location can all play a part in our perception of the identity of a city.

Reflections 2020: Call for Entries

Featured opportunity: Reflections 2020

The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts postponed its annual Open Exhibition to focus specifically upon artists’ responses to this extraordinary year. As an online exhibition, Reflections 2020 will provide a forum for artists’ work to remain in the public eye whilst respecting the need to be vigilant.

Artists are invited to enter 2D and 3D work that reflects their own experience, interpretation and observations of the impact of the pandemic.

NOW Gallery: Slices of Time, Emmanuelle Moureaux

Slices of Time

As part of its on-going Design Commission, NOW Gallery selected French architect, Emmanuelle Moureaux, to present a large-scale installation in the UK for the first time. Inspired by the gallery’s location on the Greenwich Peninsula, the vibrant installation is made up of layers of numbers in 100 shades of colours and white, reflecting the flow of time.

Jemima Burrill: “The measured detail, and calm considered order of Moureaux’s work seemed the perfect respite from the political bedlam we are experiencing. This exhibition will include everyone, giving them the opportunity to have a moment to enjoy colour and form in all its simplicity and complexity.”
